‘Are you an apple or a pear?’
While body-shape classification existed earlier – in tailoring, medicine and art history – in the late twentieth century with the rise of fashion magazines, fitness culture and the diet industry women found themselves being categorised, generalised, and too often judged, as fruits, mostly apples and pears. The apple versus pear distinction gained traction in health and nutrition science during the 1980s, when researchers studied fat distribution patterns and linked them to health risks – apple-shaped, with more abdominal fat, was associated with higher cardiovascular and metabolic risks, while pear-shaped, with more fat around the hips and thighs, was considered less risky.
There is no doubting which shape is Klaus Lelek’s favourite. In this simple tale of the evolving relationship between an artist and his perfect model, the pearwoman wins out every time.
